Reef Conservation

The conservation of this unique island is also an important area for Pemba Alive. We aim to install a functioning marine protection area. Every meter of landline is important and the goal is that the whole island in the future will be a big thriving marine park. Given the facilities of a marine biologist that monitors the  reef, studying the problems that affects the reefs. Try to find and implement solutions. To accomplish this in the best way Pemba Alive is  involving the local fishing community to teach them and their children why the reef is so important for them and us. Showing the local fishermen how they can fish without hurting the reef, how they can monitor the reef and in the future alarm and control the reefs themselves.

On-going programs

During February 2009, Oxygene Pemba and The Manta Resort, have been monitoring and assessed the resistance and resilience of the Pemba Coral Reefs against bleaching. This will allow us in the future to gain valuable knowledge, in order to implement a proper management plan in collaboration with PECCA, the marine conservation authority on Pemba. We will also be having workshops with PECCA, and a group of marine biologists, which will include training the PECCA rangers to improve reef monitoring in future on Pemba.
